Learned something I didn’t know until today (Wikipedia). “Sassafras is no longer used in commercially produced root beer since sassafras oil was banned for use in commercially mass-produced foods and drugs by the FDA in 1960 due to health concerns about the carcinogenicity of safrole, a major constituent of sassafras oil, in animal studies.”
We used to paint stuff with phosphorescent paints. I can’t imagine that those would be deemed safe these days. (And the plethora of things: rode in truck beds sitting on the sides, rode without seatbelts, without helmets and extremities pads, and even drank from the garden hose…) Amazing we are alive today.
My mother stopped making snow cream because our family doctor was concerned about the radioactive fallout in snow from all the above-ground tests in the 50s and 60s. https://www.hallmarkchannel.com/home-and-family/recipes/snow-cream I’d bet there is a lot of pollution in snow from coal plants now.

Uh oh. I used to chew sassafras root all the time when I went camping as a kid. That explains a lot.
