We assume when we tell people to stand up for themselves and to fight for what they want, they deserve it. Sometimes we are wrong and sometimes they win.
This reminds me of when I was in college-a decade before this story ran. I was proctoring an exam on Russian history. 3 hour final exam on the decline of the Tzars leading to the Russian revolution.
1/2 hour in, this cute brunette come up, drops off her test book, wishes me a merry Xmas and sashays out. I’m going to be grading the tests before the professor but I’m not going to start while kids are still working but I had to have a look at what she had done.
It was a two page letter telling the professor she didn’t feel ready to take his exam but had a lot of fun in his class and hoped it didn’t hurt his feelings.
Come January she was banging on the professor’s door saying the ‘F’ she got for effectively blowing off the final exam wasn’t fair. She’d sat in the classes! Sam didn’t change the grade.

Student-athlete fall into 2 groups:
1- Those who take their education seriously and will work hard to get good grades.
2- Those who just want grades good enough to stay eligible to play their sports.

Yes, only athletes get A’s without doing any work.

The “It’s a Greek thing” quote reminds me of the “It’s a Jersey thing” from South Park.
