Repurposing the number sign # as a hashtag is completely unobjectionable. Referring to the number sign as the pound sign is a practice whose origin is completely inexplicable. As for two spaces after a period: there really was a reason for doing that in the days of typewriters. Give us a break if we’re too old to break the habit.
I live in a closet……..this is the first I’ve heard about a problem with two spaces after a period.(2 spaces) Why is that a problem? Haven’t we got more important things to worry about?
I’m a millennial. I always have and always will put two spaces after a period. That’s the way it was done when I was taught to touch type twenty years ago, so that’s the way my hands do it. I’m very grateful my school maintained such an “old-fashioned” class. I genuinely feel that typing class was one of the most valuable classes I ever took. It blows my mind how many people use a computer each and every day but don’t know what the home keys are or what they are for.

Only people who smoke marijuana are allowed to put two spaces after a period. That’s because they’re two spaced out to care…

Strictly speaking it’s an octothorp. If. You’re not speaking strictly you can call it whatever you want. Personally, I call it the goalpost.

I’m from a musical family. I still think of it as a “sharp” sign.

No space for the period or other mark. Hashtag, octothorp, pound sign. Where ever it is used.
