Infants know language before they talk. You can teach children to sign before they have the physical ability to speak. Sign is a second language to my granddaughters.
For two of them, they have a very basic vocabulary since they gave up signing for speech. The third was a member of a girl scout troop that had a deaf member, so all the girls decided to take the “advanced course.”
