The reason there’s no green mammals is because (as Phoebe pointed out in an earlier Sunday strip) most mammals are dichromats that don’t have as good color vision as most other animals (which is the reason they don’t come the bright colors birds and reptiles do), and also because their fur isn’t as complex as the feathers of birds or the scales of reptiles, so it’s harder for them to reflect green light without cheating (like the algae sloths are known for having in their fur).

This usually happens to me when I’m laying in bed trying to fall asleep.

Alpaca’s are similar to llamas, and there’s this joke about a “drama llama” doing Shakespeare. I’m in a play right now.

Don’t worry, Phoebe, your brain doesn’t mind.

Sloths are sorta green because of the algae that grows on them.

Polar bears at the zoo occasionally turn green. They have hollow hair and algae get inside the hairs.

A good question and now I also need an answer. If color is for camouflage then more mammals should be green and if to warn predators not to eat them or to attract a mate, more should be bright red or blue or purple.

Any mammals who’re too close to “artistic” humans may end up all kinds of colors.

Phoebe is really cute here. I take it the clouds have moved away from the sun, so the green is a lighter color in the last panels.
