    Are you a real family?

Let’s see – married without children since 1989, living together since 1983 (the year we met), still in love with each other, having common, but also different interests and hobbies, having common, great friends, being besties,… – obviously not.

Each family gets to define its status. Of course, there are legalities to keep in mind.

Yes, a family of 4, but we eat like a family of 4 ones. I work days, wife work nights, kids have schedules that vary from week to week, very rarely are we all at home at the same time. Rarer still for the same meal.

It’s amazing how prejudiced one is by the way they grow up. (something we ought to take more into account in elections)

With all the different shifts and job schedules it seems we get to eat together like a “normal family” on the occasional Thanksgiving. Maybe 15 times in the last 25 years.

When I was growing up, we always ate dinner as a family. Now, I’m continuing that tradition with my twin boys. We may have missed 2-3 dinners since they were born. They’ll be 7 in July. :D

if you can’t convince them, might as well join them. you will be eating together just not at the table.

That’s better then eating at the table, with everybody staring at their phones.

Always ate together as a family while the kids were growing up, for three decades. The youngest is still at home and in school at age 28 and occasionally complains about not eating at the table. We still do when the others visit, or other relative, or guests. Can’t get more real than that, I guess.

I like the movie The Blind Side. One of my favorite scenes is when Michael, the new house guest, begins to eat the take-out Thanksgiving Dinner at the dining room table – alone. Soon the rest of the family turn off the TV and join him. No words needed.
