Is Barney a new, or an old character?

Vintage 2-way wrist radios to stay off official frequencies? The modern wrist genies must use a different band. Nice detail.

He he Dhatkham = Dotcom… So it looks like “Barney” is going to be a new character. I wonder if he will look like Barney Rubble.

It took me a minute to pronounce the name right, but Barney “dotcom”? Love it. A classic Gould-type name, but completely modern.

You guys keep surprising me, the strip gets better (both story and art) every day.

This is a dream come true for the 10 year old inside me who couldn’t wait to pull open the New York Daily News and read Dick Tracy all those years ago.

Today’s strip sets the scene for some old-fashioned detective work. The only glitch might be with the radio frequencies; if the police department isn’t using them, someone else might have taken over the wrist radio’s wavelength. On the other hand, there probably isn’t any way for someone on the internet to access those communications, so Ed won’t have any warning from that direction.

    AYE!!!

Hence the reason they showed the classic Two-way wrist radio the other day.Impressive!

Barney Dhatkham can’t wait to meet him.

It sounds like the wrist genee would use digital signal. Where as the original two-way would be analog. Nice touch guys.

Mr E-Man artist doing Dick Tracy. I hadn’t seen his art work since the Charlton comics days of the 1980’s.

The antique radios are a nice touch, but… they are rather insecure, almost certainly a clear, uncoded analog signal that anybody with a scanner could listen to. Of course, it’s unlikely anybody would be listening, as the police retired those radios years ago.

    This is fun.

Followup from yesterday re smoking in restaurants: while most northern states and big cities ban smoking in restaurants, it’s not universal. They might be meeting in a “private club” that’s exempt from a smoking ban, for instance. Or they might be someplace in Tobacco Country, where smoking is not only not prohibited but close to mandatory. I recall the “Plainclothes” site running a shout-out to the Conway, Arkansas police department… hmm…

Barney Dhatkham is indeed a new character, recurring as needed. Every cop needs a stoolie.

I remember that Lizz always was making a fashion statement and showed off new looks with each story line. It is nice to see her back as she was, and the Horn Hair look is past.

This strip is zipping right along. Happily, we’re not in Locherland any longer. I tried reversing Barney’s name, as Chet Gould used to do, until reading Wiseking’s post. Thanks for that! Makes a lot of sense. As to Lizz’s singular status, she was married to Jimmy the reporter who died. Then she became involved with Groovy Grove but he died too. Her track record hasn’t been too good thus far. Maybe it will change under this new management. Incidentally, Lizz was still a blonde back in 1960 when she first encountered The Fifth and Flyface. I still picture her that way.

That would account for the background color as his name is spoken.

I just hope he doesn’t turn out to speak in purple prose.

    APersonOfInterest:

Dick Tracy is just one of loads of comics the New York Daily News has at nydailynews.com. Dailys are in B&W and have a high-res enlargement.

They’ve also got classics like the Phantom (7 days a week), Prince Valiant and Flash Gordon (both only on Sundays).

I read more strips at the Daily News site than here.

NightShade09, I just looked at the NY Daily News site and Dick Tracy came up in color. It’s still in B&W here:

MIKE’S TRUE LAW ENFORCEMENT STORIES #1 Many years ago in New Orleans it was a quiet night. My partner and I were supposed to transport a dozen or so prisoners to night court. We pulled out in the wagon and I turned to my partner and said:

    You want some ice cream?

Ten minutes later we were parked at Baskin Robbins eating ice cream while fists pounded on the inside of the van and people yelling WE WANT ICE CREAM TOO!

    Police brutality in action.
