Wouldn’t surprise me. It really surprises me how Elly was never able to get those kids to behave as younglings. Not that she was much better with the dogs, eh?
Kids are fascinated with anything (or anyone) new. Plus they just want some attention and figured their uncle would give them some. Personally, I would expect someone who is related to them and staying at their place to be a little interested in doing something with them, but I guess not Phil.

Ankle biters? Flashback to 1968. Rugrat also, but not until we finally got carpeting in the 80’s when I was college age.
Aaron, we gave them many different names of endearment (I think they were “endearments” anyhow) in the US Army. Rug rat, curtain climber, sandwich snatcher and crumb snatcher are the other ones that I can remember. Anyone else?
And ilsapadu, i have three of the liitle brats (chihuahua’s) and mine definitely do not bite ankles (ankles are much to high off the ground for them to bite! They’re itty bitty, wee beasties!)
If Phil didn’t want to be bothered by kids, then he should’ve stayed at a hotel instead. Oh, wait … if he had stayed at a hotel, then he would have actually had to pay for his room and meals instead of getting all that for free by staying at his sister’s house!
Its not like Phil is going to play with the kids 24/7. All this comic is saying is that he was hoping to have a little time to read the newspaper. Just because in 2011 most of us no longer have newspapers…. doesn’t mean this is not a valid point. I think Phil is a great uncle, and he has been a favorite character of mine in this strip for a lot of years.

I wonder if Ellie told them to play with Uncle Phil to encourage him to move out.

So, even in the ORIGINAL comics back in the 70’s, Lynn admits she jumped ahead a few days.

You speak with authority, Aaron. Your last name wouldn’t be Johnston by any chance?
