This would make more sense if we were talking about tying Roger Maris’ record for home runs in a single season. But since we’re talking about the record for career home runs, can’t he just tie/break the record next season even if he strikes out here?
Readers under 50 may need to research the phrase “a credit to his race.” It’s a back handed compliment to a “good” African American. Schultz was not at all subtle with this week’s strip. God bless Schultz. Younger people also may not know that many whites were angry with the idea of a Black man breaking the record in 1973.
