Tennis shoes are better on varied ground. I use flip-flops only in house or around the pool. Otherwise too many things can come between flip-flop and foot while walking outdoors.
As kids we’d walk a couple blocks to the beach on concrete. Then there was a stretch of about 100 feet of asphalt between the last road and the boardwalk. I bet the temperature was that of a well-cooked pork roast – probably 160 degrees at a minimum.
By the end of the summer we had feet like hobbits – thick leathery soles: only we didn’t have fur on top of them.
Then there was the boardwalk itself. In the beginning of the summer we’d complain about the splinters – but end of summer we still got splinters but we just didn’t know it.
We had shoes we could wear, but they were just one more thing to keep track of on the beach. The shoes, sneakers, came on after dinner when we all wound up on the street chasing one another around in some game until our parents called us to bed.
We did wear regular shoes for a bit over an hour on Sunday for church.
The worst thing about cycling with racing cleats, is getting an irreparable flat far from home on a hot day. Barefoot, I walked most of the miles on the gravel shoulder, and still got blisters.
Grew up in Phoenix AZ… we kids (when barefoot) knew the best way to cross a parking lot was to use the stripes for the parking spots to walk on… they were white, so they were way cooler. ;-)
Back in the day etc., We drove right out on the sand of the beach [Lake Erie]. Local custom required a tarp or blanket act as a roof from a car door to poles, if the adults wanted to drink beer.

Back in those days my mom’s car always had vinyl seat covers. Had to remember to put your towel on it before sitting down! HOT!

I wonder how many times Patty and C.B. rehearsed that dance move? They’re perfectly in sync!

Also a good reminder not to walk your dogs if the pavement is hot to the touch.

PP’s bathing suit is terribly cute! Kinda girly for her wear, considering her style choices.

That’s why you wear flip flops when you have left the beach.

I remember walking to the beach, it was right by the house, and walking on the painted lines in the street because they were cooler than tarmac

That’s what flip flops are for. I remember getting them at KMart for 99 cents a pair.
geese28 about 4 years ago
Like walking on a path of hot coals. Surprised I didn’t get blisters
jjjoesmith about 4 years ago
When I was little, we would try to walk on to painted lines, for the parking spaces, so it wouldn’t be quite as hot as the road.

No, it’s trying to scrub the sand off your feet
