Zonker: Then it's settled - you'll accompany me to the royal wedding! Sam: But how will you explain me? I'm just a kid! Zonker: Hmm... good question. We can't say I'm your former nanny. That would sound too creepy, even to the British. I've got it! You can be my ward! Sam: Cool! What's a ward? Zonker: I'm not sure, but it's what Robin is to Batman. Sam: Neato! Wait, aren't they gay?

Uh, Zonker. Robin was played by Burt WARD when Adam West (voice of Mayor West on Family Guy) was Batman in the late 60s.

That has never been proven.

Judging from the movie posters, there’s no question of it.

No, pouncingtiger … though, Burt Ward did play Robin… Dick Grayson (Robin) was Bruce Wayne’s ward.

Zonkers

I’m trying to have my brats named wards of the state.
GrimmaTheNome over 13 years ago
It means Zonker would be ‘in loco parentis’. Well, he might manage part of that…

Q. Why did Dick Grayson always wear a nightgown before bed?
A. That was his wardrobe.

With villains like HArley Quinn and Catwomen, How could the dynamic duo be gay?!

According to Adam West (writing in “Back to the Batcave”), Burt “Ward” (Bert John Gervis, Jr) chose his stage name to reflect his role in the series. However, acccording to Wikipedia, it’s the actor’s mother’s maiden name.
If you’re a fan of the old series, that’s a great book to take from the public library and read while sitting on the beach this summer.

What with stately Wayne manor having all those big rooms, you might’ve thought Batman could’ve kept all his stuff in one of them instead of a damp, drafty cave. But then it might’ve sounded strange to hear Batman say, “Come, Robin, we must go to the Bat-Room!”
I wonder if in order to make her his ward will Zonker have to put up a ward bond?

Batman and Robin were both turned on by Batgirl, so “gayness” wasn’t an issue. On the other hand, perhaps the “Bi-namic Duo” went both ways.

Any comic reader will tell you that Dick Grayson slept with pretty much any and every woman he came into contact with! I’m guessing his utility belt was always stocked with penicillin!

Or stocked with Viagra.

Chikuku, in the Frank Miller comics version (The Dark Knight series), Robin is a girl (Carrie Kelly), so the gayness issue is moot. (Spoiler alert!) Dick Greyson turns out to be the arch villian of the series.
I don’t recall any old Batman comics where Bruce and Dick sleep in the same room, let alone in the same bed. I don’t know if they slept at all back then.

Nemesys,
I’ve seen some panels reprinted. They were from the late 50s or early 60s. Definitely creepy given today’s perspective.

I think this pretty much settles it…

Ahhh, nothing like the printed page to come back and bite you in the butt. I think there’s a pun in that statement if you think about it.

He’s waiting to find out if his parents think he’s worth the $90 ransom isn’t he? As his dad hadn’t even realised he was absent, maybe not…

The WB cartoon series in the 90’s surely does infer a pederast relationship. Epilogs scenes have Bruce and Dick having breakfast, one wearing a bath robe, the other bare chested.
pouncingtiger over 13 years ago
Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne were the character names of Robin and Batman.
