The reason people drank wine and beer was that usually the water was contaminated. Beer and wine was processed and much safer.

I wonder if they were able to maintain that beer obligation at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777–1778.

We went from winning wars while on booze and tobacco, to getting whupped in Vietnam while on reefer. Comedian Tim Wilson does a routine on this. He said during the Iraq war we were smoking crack. https://youtu.be/dHfdGM02hAI

now, is this beer by our standards or water with a touch of alcohol in it so the soldiers don’t get dysentery from drinking untreated well water?

Not only a sedative for GW’s men, but to help fight some of the daily plagues they lived with. It was almost all to be had during and after the black death and other plagues and parasites.

All of the European armies of the 18th century gave a ration of alcoholic beverages to their troops; the type of beverage differed from army to army. The British troops received rum, for example, while the Germans received whiskey.

The beer was given 10 minutes before the battle, and you had to finish the fight before you could go – it was very inspirational…

SO…if you were able to speed away from Earth fast enough (like Star Trek, faster than light speed or via wormhole), could you actually see Earth’s past from its light emissions? (just wondering….)

Didn’t the sailors in Britain’s Royal Navy get a pint of rum ration per day?

when I returned from Vietnam in 1970 we had beer on tap in the mess hall (only after the evening meal) later mess hall became “dinning facility” and the beer went away
