Everyone is commenting about how Earl does not appreciate what Opal does for him, yet no one mentions that Opal never appreciates what Earl does for her.
Duty is a nasty word for some that does things out of love. THAT is the reason she irons his shirt and so she won’t be embarrassed when he goes out. Love and self respect.
That is Earl takes wife for granted. For me I remind my husband what I do, in turn when he helps around house, which is often I tell him he does a good job, I considered house share.
Who irons at that age anymore? People that age usually purchase “wash ’n wear” shirts. I got rid of my iron years ago. Also, I always seemed to burn myself somehow.
At the risk of sounding maudlin or overly sentimental, I’ll still say “tell her, Earl.” The day may come, especially in times like these, when you won’t be able to tell her (or him). And no amount of “stimulus” or “relief” will bring that opportunity back. One who knows. Thank you.

Well while not talked about recently Earl has his chores and Opal has hers; just like any married couple.

Reminds me of an old Norwegian joke:“Yah, det Oskar loved his wife so much he almost told her!”

Obviously this is a formula that has worked well for he and Opal, but there are times Earl is a terrible role model for his grandson.

Earl did say “thank you”.. that, should be more than enough. Nelson is learning valuable life lessons from his grandpa.

Yep, Earl must be related to that old Norwegian farmer whose wife passed away. Tired joke and a bit sad. Sorry.
