When she (& I) was a little girl, LL Bean send a catalog out in the fall as did so many (some now departed) companies to advertise winter wear and provide a wide range of Christmas ideas.
Today, I can expect as many as three Bean catalogs in one delivery … only to be repeated by more in a few days but never more than a couple weeks. Only Orvis has ever out-cataloged me.
Caulfield has learned a very valuable lesson. We were all children once and every new generation of us enjoys similar thoughts and ideas. It just takes some much longer to realize how much they have in common with us old folks.
Here’s an honest observation I encountered years ago that’s stood me in good stead ever since: Every human being on Earth (or who’s ever lived) is incredibly ignorant about almost everything. This is not a complaint or an insult, it’s simply a recognition of the staggering amount of possible knowledge one can have which nobody will ever, ever, ever be able to absorb. But if we do OK in the areas that matter most in our daily lives, we’ll get by. Just don’t feel all superior to somebody whose expertise may lie in a different area than your own.

And a little comeuppance makes Caulfield a better person, in my opinion.
