While yes Beethoven died long before Hitler was even born, there is an odd shred of truth to this. Beethoven’s Fifth has became synonymous with V for Victory and was used for some transmissions during World War II.

Initially Beethoven was amazed by Napoleon and composed the 3rd Symphony . Only after a few years did he withdraw the dedication .

Surprising to see one of the most notorious dictators in history to be mentioned by name in a light hearted comic like this.

Wagner was German and the Hitler regime incorporated his music into their rallies and national institutions. One must remember that when Hitler rose to power the world was in the throes of a depression and Hitler, a charismatic speaker, was able to use current events of his day to aid his vision of redeeming German glories.

If the sixteenth of December be on a Sunday, and this comic be in the 1970’s, then it’s either 1973 or 1979. I seem to remember the former.

I seriously hope that Schroeder was in that classroom, or it was completely wasted effort.

If I were the head honcho at GoComics, I’d either change the name in Panel 4, or, if that’s not possible, just delete that whole strip. I think the name might be considered offensive to a number of people, especially among readers of the Jewish faith (including me).

Or Napoleon! Beethoven never supported Napoleon, either!
