Originalists seem to forget (if they ever knew) that common word usage in a language does change over time. Do they have someone to translate from THEN usage to NOW usage? They even had more letters in the alphabet then.
Next time I get pulled over for speeding and there will be a next time. I will politely tell the officer, you can’t give me a ticket, speeding isn’t in the constitution.
Also, force them to live with leeching and other medical “cures”, with life expectancy around 35 and death from curable diseases. Seven children, Ancilla Barrett? How many will live to adulthood? half?
Now, now, they DID have books and newspapers in 1789, along with the Franklin Stove. Also, someone of “importance” would ride to work in a horse-driven carriage. Imagine making coffee, 1789-style….
Gosh, reminds me of how many people have an originalist interpretation of the bible written a mere 2000+ years ago. Nothing’s changed since then. Science, you say? Phhhtt! God’s word is far more scientific than the pale junk of today. Think how he spoke and the universe came to be. Decreed the animals (human and nonhuman) be formed and live. Condemned Satan to be a snake. And he even invented sin so he could have some fun playing with us.
The Judicial “Originalists” are just like those that say they always make decisions based on “what would Jesus do”, and then decide Jesus would make the decision they wanted in the first place.
Reminded me of “The Patriot”. Mel Gibson plays a well-to-do gentleman during Revolutionary times. In one scene he is walking through his home carrying a candelabra. I recall thinking that was hi-tech at the time.
What can we proactively do to put our constitutional democratic republic and its government of the people, by the people, and for the people back on a forward track?Attempting to shame/insult the authoritarians who have invaded/corrupted our dysfunctional 2 party system — that the founders warned us about — is not very effective in rectifying the situation.
Originalist, hah. I keep rereading the 2nd amendment and not finding anything about “self defense”. I do find, however, concern for the security of “a free State” (and in the constitution, “State” always means one of the constituent members of “the Union”). And I find “bear arms”, which in the 18th cent. was a term of soldiery, and didn’t at all mean “pick up a weapon and carry it around”.

Yep. Completely at odds with utility, reason… need I mention “justice” (as seen by all the rest of us, who actually live in reality).

Oh, they had hospitals in 1789. But you wouldn’t want to be in one. And the treatment of choice for most maladies was still bleeding. Cheers.

Just need a good house “boy” or “mammy”, with no civil rights, serving the family. And the wife is entirely too uppity.
