The “O” at the front of the line makes it confusing—but if there hadn’t been another letter there, the “N” would already be buying its ticket, and there’d be no way for the “G” to “cut in.”
I give Mr. Blazek credit for a good bit of wordplay, but it was very hard to execute successfully.
Time to renew my crusade against the ignoring of silent letters. For your edification, I’m referring to words such as “doubt”, “rhyme”, and obviously, “gnu”. You can support the cause by pronouncing those silent letters when they appear in speech and writing. Try it yourself. Equal rights for all letters!

If the “O” was an “A”, believe me, you would know a gnu was there.

Silent ‘G’ can get away with just about anything, so long as he can find an ‘N’ as a willing accomplice.

That initial O screws up the joke. He should have used a word with an interior silent G like phlegm or campaign or align.

Often, when I’m asked to spell a proper name that begins with a K over the phone, I’ll start out by saying: “K as in knife.”
