We have a saying, âThe devil knows more because heâs old, than because heâs the devil.â Same goes for Santa, Calvinâyou ainât foolinâ nobody.
Hobbsâ last statement is reflective of many peopleâs concept of morality: God is a bookkeeper: as long as you do enough good deeds, you can do as many equal and opposite bad deeds minus one. The objective is to have a positive balance and you go to heaven. If you are overdrawn then to hell with you.
Some people even carry this over to personal relationships. I really pissed off the old lady by staying out late with the boys and coming home drunk. Iâll buy her some flowers and weâll be even.
Calvin started by embroidering the truth and wrongfully implementing Hobbes and then turned it into an outright lie against Susie. He and Hobbes werenât plotting anything this time â it was one of the rare times when Hobbes was genuinely trying to talk Calvin out of doing something bad. There are other times when Hobbes really has led Calvin into temptation.
This reminds me of Dennis the Menace raiding the cookie jar with his best friend: âRelax, Joey. Iâll let ya know when itâs time to start being good for Santa Claus.â

How hard would it be to just say Susie hit you unprovoked instead of blurting out that you were planning on hitting her?

I wonder if any parents actually punish bad behavior by not giving their children any presents. Iâve never heard of that happening in real life.
