Amen. You could watch tv right to the bit showing a destroyer crashing through heavy waves while a song with the name I wish I could remember. Then along came 24/7 cable news. Since there is a finite amount of “new” stuff in a given day and tv only survives when there are eyes on screen, they had to come up with new insane ways of getting us to watch.
All breaking news, all the time! And we must have something every day requiring the Situation Room! (Though if I had to choose, I’d still pick Ted Turner over Rupert/Lachlan Murdoch!)
Pearl Harbor was announced over radio less than five minutes after someone realized what was happening. The same was true with economic downturns. Now anyone can see a president flinch while being attacked and simultaneously watch an American city burn while firefighters are kept at bay by mayors, governors and other anarchists.
Network news started declining when networks (CBS, ABC, NBC, etc.) started merging their news divisions with their entertainment divisions. Instead of news being reported factually, it became sensationalized (i.e., more entertaining).

That’s true. Today’s news and social media overly dramatizes everything.

Well, there were a lot of newspapers competing for readers. I imagine they used some hype.
