It occurs to me, from all the survival scenarios Spiff gets into, and how many issues with Time Travel, Duplicators, Transmogrifiers, his superhero battles, etc. that he has faced, gotten out of, including the Snow Goon plague…. he’s quite a resilient and imaginative soul.
I think in later life, he might end up a creative of some sort and be constantly finding ways to start new lines of business, to try new opportunities, and that might lead to some success with all that resilience.
All he’d really need to add would be a bit more social graces and a bit of wisdom (and he’s only 6 now so there’s another 10+ years to get at least a wee bit of those).
Maybe it’s me, but I want to assume there’s a post C&H Calvin that found a place, however unconventional (Waterson is) and that he’s found a gal that finds his imagination a positive and he’s had a chance to have his own kids (he’ll have two so as to not have the isolation he may remember when he was younger…) and to find ways in the more modern world to find a successful future using his creativity and resilience.
And I’ll bet the kids would have an orange tabby cat called Hobbes. Of course, he won’t let on, but Hobbes will still be his bosom buddy.
It’d be a kind of meta irony if he ended up being a web comic author and SF&F writer. Maybe his partner will be a good editor and her maiden name might be Derkins (who is possibly a doctor or scientist or teacher/professor who helps keep household finances going through Calvin’s rollercoaster ventures).
I used to love it, when I seen a Spiff Sunday strip, I’d put my hand over the last panel and try to figure out what Spiff’s adventure had to do with Cal’s real life. Sadly, I know them all by heart now
My favorite C&H Sunday theme – Spaceman Spiff on an unexplored planet and threatened by hideous aliens. When this happens, Watterson takes me back to my earliest years, imagination on fire with adventures and, with my best friends, defeating a hostile alien invasion. To create this kind of strip, I think Watterson never really grew up, and that’s a good thing.
Spiff crashes his spacecraft more often than the Robinson family on ‘Lost In Space’. Behind the scenes, the cast of Lost In Space referred to Major Don West as ‘Crash West’.

Spaceman Spiff is incredibly smart. Maybe he should be the one taking the math tests.

Spaceman Spiff is always a good read. Kind of makes me wish that Bill Watterson would have done a spin off of it in some form back in the day….

If Spiff is so incredible, why does he crash so often? Maybe he should spend a little time on maintenance.
