I played football in 8th, 9th, and 10th grades (fortunately they weren’t moronic enough to have Pee Wee football back then); stupidest thing I’ve ever done (and that’s a fairly strong statement…..). I’ll be 65 in a few weeks and, as a result of my 3rd & 4th back surgeries last fall – for a condition which had its genesis in those 3 seasons of doing things the human body wasn’t meant to do – I currently require a walker or cane to be ambulatory; that may or may not not be permanent.
My baby brother played (with much more abandon than I) 8th grade through sophomore in college; he’s way worse than I am – both knees replaced, a shoulder that needs replaced but can’t be because the muscles and connective tissues are too far gone, and next week he’ll have yet another back surgery. And that doesn’t even count the damage from all the concussions and – even more pernicious – the constant, smaller head impacts that don’t concuss, but happen every play, and do add up.
Letting your kid play football is child endangerment, pure and simple.
I never understood caring about any sports team, maybe unless you have a friend/relative on the team. One summer in the 70s my brother played youth league baseball, and neither he nor my parents ever thought they should attend his games; he played because he like it, period.
To paraphrase one of my favorite Our Favored Customers comics: People who get all snarky about their lack of interest in sports are way more annoying that people who just want to enjoy the games.

I don’t follow the sport. It is the one and only sport we did not allow our sons to play.

My son, commenting on his only day “going out” for football: “It’s murder out there!” He catches on quickly.

There is not one professional sport that is pleasurable because of the demand for advertising and social signaling.

Clyde has summed it up perfectly. I used to love football, when is was still a sport.

But remember… they chose to play football. No one forced them to play.
