My husband and I are often, have we seen this movie… No, I don’t think so… 5 minutes later… I think we have seen this but I don’t remember what happened, let’s watch it.
I have seen several movies several times. Some I have even DVR’d. I have developed a new appreciation of “The 49th Parallel” and “The Flight of the Phoenix.” Since July of 2020 I have avoided anything with a less than happy ending, but I think that is just me. BBCA is running the Hobbit trilogy all day today and IIRC, the extended versions. Or they are really loading them up with commercials. Probably the latter.
The first minute I say, have I seen this? The next thirty I say, I haven’t seen this. After that it’s, I’ve seen one like this. Then at the end, it’s $#/+, I’ve seen this.
I understand pandemic fatigue but I have also started using the phrase “in the after times” in conversation whereas I used to only say “in the before times.” The corner is being turned, there is some light on the horizon but keep wearing the mask(s). :)
Our first date was a midnight showing of The Godfather at a theater in the 1970s which catered to college students (contact high not uncommon). Mutual love of movies -old and new – were one of the things which drew us together. We have gone to movie theaters in every state we have visited on Saturday nights while traveling – we even saw “Star Wars” the first time while on a trip to Boston (the theater was in a shopping center adjacent to the hotel).
In normal times we go just about every Saturday night (unless snowing or such) for dinner out (at Wendys in recent years) and a movie (local independent theater which gets first run major movies – US$14 for the two of us at senior rate).
We do not consider watching a movie on TV – watching a movie – we consider that watching TV. There is a major difference between the two. I have seen old movies that I had never seen in a theater and been amazed at the difference. We saw a movie with Tom Hanks called “Greyhound” which was good, but like almost all movies was intended to be seen on a movie screen and lost due to watching on TV. It is a movie about a group of US war ships being delivered to the European theater in WWII. It really needed the massive screen of a movie theater.
But what we can do? So now our Saturday night date is take out Chinese (at first last year not even that) and a movie on TV. He had gotten Rokus for the TVs back in 2018 and finally was going to show how wonderful Roku was for our first date night at home. He started going through the movies – while the dinner I had cooked started going cold. He could not find anything to watch – finally as he passed “Leap of Faith” yet again I suggested we watch it – an old favorite so we did. What annoyed me was that we had wasted all that time – but commercials (I don’t object to same, but do in this case only because) – when we could have just have pulled out the DVD and watched it anyway – we have a huge DVD, VHS, Beta collection.

It’s impossible to watch everything on Netflix, there are too many choices. However, it’s extremely possible to run out of stuff WORTH watching.
