Prelvis Esley I thought everyone knew about him having a black belt in karate even though he didn’t star in a whole slew of martial arts movies like Chuck Norris and Jet Li have. Here’s a correction if I may. No martial artist is a black belt because a black belt is an article of clothing that they wear with their gi, but a lot of martial artists have black belts.

May the Lord be with you.

I would’ve guessed Coke was initially made with cocaine. Now I just feel silly.

While it’s technically true that the first formula was alcoholic, it wasn’t officially distributed until after the Atlanta area prohibited alcohol, and it was then marketed specifically as a “temperance drink” with it’s new non-alcoholic recipe.

Of course, it still contained cocaine at the time.

Elvis’s karateka body guard Ed Parker (1931-1990) was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; the former once invited the latter to a Latter-day Saint high schoolers’ seminary (scripture study during the school year).

At that time Coca leaves were not controlled in the US and coke as well as many medicines like laudanum were popular over the counter drugs.

Elvis was such a physical and pharmaceutical mess before he died at 42, it’s difficult imagining him being really competent in karate.

Advertising copy has provided lots of go to words in our lexicon. There’s a constant struggle going on in ad agencies to find Le Bon Mot to get a product to sell to the gullible.

Coke is still with us, but it wasn’t the ad copy that kept it going. It has survived on its own, but with a few deep dives in sales of certain products that were designed to attract the in crowds to the supposedly healthy updates.

Elvis is a tragic example of talent mislead into excess by the people who supposedly cared for him. Loved a lot of his music. Hated seeing his gradual deterioration.

How did Elvis transform from being a black belt to become a white musical performer? There must have been some serious witchcraft going on.

“When freelance copywriter Vinnie Chieco saw the prototype at an Apple brainstorming session he immediately recalled the extravehicular activity Pod in 2001: A Space Odyssey. This EVA Pod (ePod) was the direct inspiration in naming the iPod.” (memeburn.com)

also back in the day, after the success of “Enter the Dragon”, rumor had it that Bruce Lee had reached out to Elvis to co-star in a film together, because Elvis was black belt, but Mr. Lee, alas, …and sounded so cool, never checked to see if true
