There’s a musician in Taiwan that I’ve been following on and off on YouTube for several years, and she goes through these occasional periods where she re-imagines herself and returns with a new name and a new style.
After one of her transformations, I noticed she was suddenly playing her guitar right-handed. Because I knew she wasn’t, I asked if she’d used the time between accounts to learn that. Turns out it was just a video quirk like the above.
I didn’t know about this phenomena when I called the local board of elections about a picture in the local newspaper that had the flag displayed improperly.
A few weeks ago, I finally got a computer that has a webcam. (I know, I’m a late bloomer, and all that.) I didn’t realize that the camera lens reverses everything until I used it for the first time. Like a mirror.
I have to admit, I seriously wonder why Zoom (or any app) flips video backward. If people were looking at me face to face they wouldn’t see my right shoulder on the left side of my body. Why should they do so on Zoom? Or am I missing something entirely there? Is the video flipped only for me but not for them? Or is it flipped for them or not for me? Or is it a quantum flip and both flips exist simultaneously and affect one another? Is the flip actually a Matrix that only represents reality? Wait… I think it is. That’s it! Zoom isn’t real! It’s just a virtual representation of real people who are trapped inside pods they call “homes”… and Zoom is just a computerized world in which they communicate. Suddenly it all becomes so very clear.

I always wondered about that. They can make a super computer that fits in your hand, but can’t get the camera to display properly?

“The camera in this app?” I thought the default phone camera flipped everything anyway.

I’m surprised this week isn’t Jason talking about how Andy wasn’t letting him watch season four of Castlevenia on Netflix.

I get this feeling in Zoom conferences where my image appears as the camera sees it, not as the kind of image we’re accustomed to seeing in a mirror.

Why not use the normal camera installed in your phone? Or, even better, use a classical camera instead.
