During the Victorian era, there was a scholar famed for his ill temper. One day, his butler did something to anger him, and he shoved the poor man through a second-story window. He suddenly gasped in horror and looked down. āOh my god, the pansies!ā
While patching a cedar-shingle roof in Coos Bay a l-o-o-o-o-n-g time ago ā in a dampening rain ā I slid off the roof. Fortunately, I landed in a bush. UNfortunately, it was a rose bush.
Growing up, one of the neighbourhood kids decided to ādo a Batmanā out of the gable window, thinking his ācapeā (picnic blanket pinned to the shoulders of his T-shirt) would save him. One broken arm laterā¦he learned about gravity.
If Calvin was an adult that stunt would get him awarded āAt-Risk Survivorā status by the crowd who give out the Darwin Awards each year. I remember a dude nicknamed āLawn Chair Larryā achieved flight at 15000 ft. via a chaise lounge and 45 helium filled weather balloons in SoCal back in the ā80s. He was one of the first recipients of this esteemed award. Give Calvin a few years and he can probably follow in Larryās footstepsā¦..
This is another example of Hobbes being shown without Calvin and speaking directly to us. I know that Calvin might be imagining Hobbes speaking but I think it is more likely that it reflects Bill Wattersonās stated view that he didnāt see Hobbes as part of Calvinās imagination. It also shows that Calvin and Hobbes can both see through the fourth wall and often break it.
We only jumped off of a step ladder with a sheet and ropes tied to the corners. We were certain we could feel it slow us down. Fortunately from that height we didnāt hurt and thing. Copying a popular tv show from the early 60ās. Ripcord
āGeronimoā (respectfully) initially yelled by 187th Regiment, 11th Airborne Division, paratroopers when jumping from their aircraft during WW II (Pacific Theater). A salute to their Veterans and all Paratroopers.
Many, many children used to do this. I did it with a towel. Aerodynamically it makes not a whit of difference but the punishment is less than ruining bedclothes. :)
Even did a trial run with a G.I. Joe and a silk handkerchief. I was not deterred that his plastic leg broke off.
The first, second, and last panels are lines my familyās been quoting ever since they were written and while we were raising our four kids. We used them to remind them that yes they do need to ask and that it was okay to be told no. And sometimes, surprise, yes!

Wouldnāt a real six year-old die if they jumped out a two-story window? Even with a (weak) blanket parachute?
