Here in the northeast corner of the U.S. I get to see and hear a lot of the jets going and coming from Europe. There certainly aren’t as many in the last year, but there is more air traffic lately. I love living where, as I walk my dog, the silence is broken by the noise of jet flying overhead at 40,000 feet.

You can also determine which way the wind is blowing at that altitude if you watch long enough.

My expertise is cars. I can tell, for instance, just by looking at a car’s headlights at night, what direction it’s coming from.

It’s short for “condensation trail”. What you are seeing is water vapor, like any other cloud.
