Oooh, suddenly I am not feeling alone. Although many people from bank sector who lost their jobs recently discovered that they need to count before they check out when buying groceries… Not feeling so superior anymore.
When I worked in a pizza place in the ‘70s, two of my coworkers had master’s degrees and several had bachelors. It was in Berkeley. I was 4 units of a BA. Finally got it in ’91.
We need to respect and emphasize vocational training like they did when I was in school. Not everyone needs to go to college, and trades/apprenticeship are paying quite well these days.
Sigh. I have a MS Pharmacology myself, but just a few months prior to graduation, the state upped the requirement to a PhD with no grandfathering period. So I had debt of $40K for nothing.
Here’s the deal, get a marketable degree, you will get a job. Get a degree in BS, you will not get a job. OR, save yourself a lot of money and learn a trade. It cost nothing to learn, you earn while you learn, and you will be employed for life at good pay. Currently there is a major shortage of carpenters, plumber, electricians, HVAC-R workers, painters, drywall hangers, heavy equipment operators, crane operators, brick layers, and even quality roof installers. And this even with the exorbitant number of illegals filling positions.

I grew up a lot when I graduated and discovered that my degree meant nothing at all.

Many companies can’t find the workers they need. They require a graduate degree and are offering $18,000 a year but people are too lazy to work.

“What do you say to a Ph.D. astrophysicist?”
“I’ll have fries with that burger.”
(Not so funny when I was in grad school)
