I’d feel much better with a SCOTUS that was not selected by politicians, i.e. one that was unbiased and objective in interpreting the law.

SCOTUS failed the US by allowing the restrictive voting law to stand. The city of Washington D.C. itself is under represented and could use the help. Let’s see which party rises to provide equal and fair representation for all Americans. Place your bets?

Tired of voting districts that look like a three year old was given a pair of scissors and some craft paper? Tired of people trying to make it hard to vote? Tired of people working hard to take away your right to equal reprentation and to voice your opinions to Congress?

Bad idea. Remember,‘one man, one vote’? Two Senators from DC would have the save as two from California, with 50 times the people.

D.C. residents should be free of taxes. No representation.

the fairest thing would be a senate based more closely to proportional

next would be borders to states redrawn, incorporating DC into Maryland.

until then.. . DC should be a state

and Puerto Rico should be given a choice . . .either Independence or statehood

DC should never become a state, as long as the Federal Government is there. Now, if we move the Federal government out of DC, to a place that is not part of a state, then I really do not care if DC becomes a state. Of course, if the Federal government moves out of DC, then the agreement from the states that donated the land, will all need to be rescinded, and the states that gave the land would need to agree to allow DC to be seperate from them. There is a reason that we, as a nation, did not want the Federal government to be in a single state. By the way, per capita, DC receives more federal money than any other city or state in thee union. Would this be acceptable if DC were a state? If you think it would be ok, why do you feel that way? Also, a majority of Federal employees live in DC, compared to all other cities or states, per capita. Would that be fair if it were a state? Now, if the people that live in DC want to be part of a state, lets shrink the capital down, and give the rest of the city back to the various states that surround it. Then they get to be “represented” just like the citizens of the states that surround them. Or, like I stated, move the Federal Government out of the area, say to the geographical center of the contiguous states (lower 48). THE GEOGRAPHIC CENTER OF THE Contiguous United States is located about two miles northwest of Lebanon, Kansas. A small stone pyramid marks the point measured by a survey performed in 1918. I am sure that Kansas will give up the land. Then only after all of the US Federal government is moved, we can look at making DC a state.

For those that are complaining about DC representation, how about some facts. First fact, Did you know that Montana has only one house member, for a population of 1.07 million people, while NY has one for each 717k people, California 1 for every 702k people, and Rhode Island 1 for ever 526k people (the lowest number of population to number of house members, even lower that Wyoming who has 1 house member for their 579K population).

All but seven states have populations smaller than Los Angeles County and they all get the same number of Senators as California. Citizens of Washington, D.C. pay the same federal taxes yet they have no vote in Congress. Taxation without representation is what set the colonists on the road to Independence. As far as the number of Senators goes two per state is ludicrous. That’s why we have an idiot from Kentucky (pop. 4.5 million) determining the fate of states like California (pop. 39.5 million). Citizens in California, New York, Florida and Texas should be outraged that representatives from states with minuscule populations have the same weight in governance. It’s counter-intuitive, counter-productive and patently unfair.

The 2020 Census reported DC’s population at 689,545. It is not a state. Its citizens have no representation in Congress.

I live in Wisconsin. The 1850 Census reported its population at 305,391. It had already been a state for two years.

The patriots who founded America started out at the Boston Tea Party and subsequently threw off the yoke of British royal rule under the rallying cry “Taxation without representation is tyranny!”.

Interesting that so many commenters here come down — in public, out loud — so squarely on the side of tyranny.

I do not really understand the objections to DC becoming a state. The city government receives only 25 % of its budget from federal sources and that money is mostly earmarked to service the federal government. As a state, DC would have the same representation as other states; one representative based on population, two senators based on statehood. As for property, set aside major federal sites, i.e., White House, Mall, Capitol Building, federal agencies within the boundaries of DC. These would be administered by GSA—just like now. All other property becomes State of District Columbia, with private property being administered exactly like it is in any other state.

Nothing wrong with doing Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Gaum, Marianas the same.
