I used to pet sit for my mom when she went on vacation. Her cat didn’t particularly like me, but toward the end of the week would show me some dinner time love. I remember the last day of one vacation where the cat was rubbing up against my leg looking for attention. I was petting her when my mom walked through the door yelling “I’m home!” The cat looked up at me, took a swipe, and ran toward the door to greet her. I don’t miss that cat.
So typical of cats! When my husband and I needed to be out of town for 2 days to to his mom’s funeral I missed my cat Macushla like crazy. My arms missed holding her. When I got home she was on the sofa sleeping. She woke up and looked at me like oh, so you’re home and went back to sleep. Not exactly the greeting I was hoping for. But a half hour later she was all over me begging me to never leave her again.
My parents had a large affectionate German Shepherd. My siblings and I would take care of her when they went away. If they went away for a few days the dog, upon their homecoming, would rush to greet them then, after a minute she would go lie on her bed ignore them for a couple of hours. Apt punishment I guess. Then was her usual playful self
I’ve heard it said that cats don’t care if we are home or not. Pretty sure they miss us when we take off for longer than a day or two. All of mine did and let me know it too.
What our Jingle Belle Katt does EVERY night when we all settle down together. I have to move her over a little when her claws start piercing flesh through the blanket…
Lindy had a particular way of laying her ears back and barking at us when we’d been away. Then she’d be Velcro for a week. Next trip, she’d greet the dogsitter like a long lost friend.

I had a cat that would count the days I was gone, and as soon as I came home she would run away for exactly that same number of days.

My Cat used to run and jump on me to greet me even when I was gone for only a few minutes. Sometimes people would ask why I named my dog “My Cat”.
