Never got the hang of an abacus. My dad showed me how to use an adding machine when I was 7 or 8. The kind where you had to pull a lever. Way pre-calculator. I wanted one for myself. Later he showed me multiplication. That was work.
You don’t actually “count” anything with an abacus, any more than you “count” things with pencil and paper. The arithmetic operations are all mental, the abacus just keeps track of where you are.
