As you may know, we live in a part of northern Maine that is extremely rural.
With that aspect comes the wild critters.
The wild critters like the thought of eating the chickens, ducks and turkeys that we raise for food and barter.
Alpha Cat has a very strong sense of territory and duty. He protects his small cat tribe, his birds, his property line and always makes sure that Pat, his human, is escorted whenever she works outside in what he considers to be the ‘dangerous’ parts of the back yard. He’ll actually hang across her shoulders (from which high point he can see much more) and if needed will pat her face to draw her attention to things he wants her to see or warn her about.
For the past three nights this warrior cat has been on sentry duty in the back yard. He has two spots, both close to the bird pen, that he does not leave except to come in for a drink of water every so often. He’ll sit there like a fur covered statue – just watching and waiting. (He’ll accept food while on duty outside but water he doesn’t. No idea why. He comes inside for that.)
Pat and I both know that Alpha Cat is not a frivolous cat. If he wants to go out it’s because he has a task to perform, be it patrolling his territory, checking on the birds or maintaining surveillance on something that could be a threat that’s in the area. It’s business and duty, rarely pleasure, with him.
We’ve figured out what it is that he’s waiting for at the bird pen – a big boar bear. Pat smelt it yesterday. Alpha Cat has been keeping tabs on it for a while now and he is not going to let it harm his birds.
We’re not worried about him, we’ve seen him face down bears before. We don’t know how he does it but there’s something about his demeanor and the way he’ll just stand there, waiting, that makes his enemies think better of attacking him. He doesn’t yowl, spit, fluff up or dance around – he just waits. They stand there, stare at each other and then the intruder will shuffle off.
I don’t have any shredded pant legs and so far, the scratches on my arms, legs, hands and feet have been pretty minor (no arteries involved) but I have a couple T-shirts that are full of little holes made by cat claws.
National Just Because Day. Every day we all do things that are expected or required of us. Sometimes we even do things because we have to do them, we don’t know why. Well, on this occasion, that does not apply. This day is a chance to do something without rhyme or reason.
There are only a couple associates besides me working in our garden center/stationery, seasonal/ back-to-school area. Last year, we had Chris, the whistler (some of you may remember me mentioning him) who actually told me that it was my fault that the plants all died the week that I took vacation in July. He said I shouldn’t have taken vacation that week. Thankfully, he quit last year. This year, we got a new person in our area. Her name is Gopinder. She used to work in apparel, but she loves plants and gardening, so she transferred to our area. She did a really good job taking care of the plants while I was on vacation (both in July and August) and it’s great knowing she is there taking care of things. But the pressures of back-to-school are getting to her. Trying to straighten up an area that gets trashed ten minutes later and trying to get anything done with the aisles crammed with shoppers is difficult. The crowded aisles never really bothered me much, but I too, get frustrated when I straighten things up only to see it trashed before I get finished straightening up the next aisle. I’m afraid the strain might be more than Gopinder can handle. She’s talking about leaving the department. I hope I can convince her to hang in there because she’s good for our garden center – the best we’ve had in years (aside from myself, of course). School starts next week. A couple schools have already started. Back-to school is certainly a challenge, but to me, Halloween is worse. People trying on masks and messing up costumes and letting costumes fall on the floor, then walking all over them and running their carts all over them…yes, Halloween is worse than back-to-school. But I’m certainly not about to tell Gopinder that!
No, not acceptable. A sharp word, then a claw trimming is in order. My cat pat me on the leg to show she loves me, never uses claws for that. Claws means your one of the boundaries of my territory.
Kittens have razors for claws. They are not allowed to jump up onto my legs or the bottom of my sundresses or nightgowns.My arms and hands do get scratches, though. It’s just part of having kittens in the house. I do keep a large supply of different sizes of bandages.

A neighbor did….and apparently a predator bird took it…at least that’s what his girlfriend told me just after New Year. There was hope that a fellow camper did as she was the sweetest, friendliest cat ever. I hate him. He has a new kitten whom he began letting outside. At least it is not friendly but no one is happy about this. Irresponsible and stupid guy.
...Last evening while I was doing work behind my garage, that neighbor arrived home and was calling for his kitten. The kitten had entered my garage and I located it in my basement enjoying the new territory! It sniffed my hand and let itself be picked up (I checked out the lay of the land and dubbed it a she.) I handed her to him and he carried her inside. My words to him consisted of him keeping her safely inside in future. The cat has 4 floors to play in, investigate, lounge, etc. He could put mesh around his porch for her to safely roam….my cats are happy with that set up. BTW…she is a gorgeous American Shorthair with white belly and feet….very petite. Shiny smooth coat.
Well, not exactly a severed artery but Christopher did nail a leg vein though my white slacks and I only noticed it outside my house…..red on white.…all I needed was some blue courtesy of Crystal Gayle! (MY eyes are green/gray anyway). .
My parting gift from my 20 year two month old cat was a bite on my finger, went through the joint, into the tendon. $10,000 worth of surgery. We were at the vet and he thought as I picked him up I was the dog that was growling across the room. When he was still a kitten he bit through a finger nail. He was a very good watch cat, inside only, of whom everybody was afraid except me. He was the bestest cat I ever had.
Whatever you do, do NOT touch a cat’s belly. That’s just asking for trouble! (Of course, sometimes they like it, but you never know when.) On another note, saw two rabbits and two juncos while out walking today.

ALPHA CAT UPDATE
