It’s about time that Betty said something nice about Bub’s project. Spouses are supposed to be supportive of one another. A hand-made bookcase might become a family heirloom. A store-bought mass-produced bookcase is just furniture.
We have a bookshelf my wife made in wood shop in high school in the mid-90s. You know you are in lumber country when the high school wood shop has walnut available.
A number of years ago the late Terry Pratchett came to town for a talk, and my wife and I attended. He was a very charming and entertaining speaker, as you might well expect. I particularly remember the story of his bookshelves. From memory, it went something like this (stripped of its charm and amusing details):
When I became somewhat successful and had some spare money, I decided that I needed to organize the piles of books I had all around the house. I had had some bookshelves of the kind that had shelves that bowed in the middle from the weight of the books—totally unsatisfactory, and inadequate for the numbers of books. I commissioned some handsome and strong bookshelves, enough of them to hold all the piles of books. When they were finished I put the books in them, and there was even one shelf that was only half-full, so I could add some. I was so proud. Then my wife asked me, What about the piles in the bedroom?
