Brutus, you should say the following: Good question son. There were serious discussions at the time as to what to call the day, AND Rest Day was in fact considered. Some states had already enacted the holiday prior to it becoming a Federal Holiday and had called it Labor Day. However, to settle the name controversy, they put all the names in one hat; President Grover Cleveland picked out Labor Day and there you have it. A Fib mixed with truth is always a better way to handle a question like that….
Labor Day is to recognized those that get the work done that matters. Not sure why offices are closed on Labor Day. :P
A CEO could take a year off, no one would really notice. If all the delivery people and truck drivers took a week off, everyone would notice. OK, it would probably only take two or three days.
So many places are open on Labor Day now so it’s not that big of a holiday. I worked shift-work for years and weekends and holidays were just another day.

It’s Wilberforce question following the Liberalist logic?

I always thought labor day should be the only day of the year you had to work.

Because calling it “rest day” would become too ephemeral!!

Because it’s celebrated on a Monday, not Sunday.

There’s no honor in rest day.

It very rarely happens, but in this instance Wilberforce is guilty of over thinking something.
