I can never fit the dog we had when I was a kid in any of these scenarios. He was big, black and could have played the lead in ‘The Hound f the Baskervilles’. Wouldn’t do anything useful except kill Dingos. When the last of us left home he turned up on a farm where my brother had worked and spent the rest of his life bringing in the cows. How or why nobody ever knew.
There was a Far Side cartoon that was similar to this. It was split into two panels labelled “What we say to dogs” and “What dogs hear”. The only part of the owner’s speech which the dog understood was its own name.

I never liked using the word “treat” with our dogs.
“Treat” implies a luxury. The word “biscuit” on the other hand implies a basic ration they are entitled to by natural law.
