I noticed that dynamic with my sisters. I wondered why I could get so upset with them, more so than other people I know. I figure it is because they are the closest members of my small, scattered family and they are exceptionally important to me.
As someone whose wife of 34 years died in March, I disagree. Also by that logic I “love” all of the crazy drivers on the road and the idiots in public.
With the horrifying numbers of women abused and murdered each year, I don’t think this is either funny or appropriate. I worked for a large police department for four years and I know.
Women, if the male in your life is abusive, be it physically, verbally or emotionally, go! Get out. Call for help if you are afraid, especially if he has threatened to kill you or your family if you leave. There are local agencies and also the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (1-800-799-7233).
If you are dating a guy and he is controlling or ridiculing or overly critical, run. If a guy tries to separate you from your friends or family, run. It will get worse, not better.
Be wary of changes. The nicest guy I’ve ever known, very happily married, a good friend for over 15 years, recently went off one day and brutally beat his wife to death — the police described the scene as “horrific.” Yes, it can happen to you.
And yes, I know in extremely rare circumstances, a man is abused by the woman in his life, so please spare me the comments. Those are not the ones filling the emergency rooms or morgues.

I guess I don’t love my hubby. We’re coming up on 20 years, and I’m still dizzy in love with him.

Husband and I have been married 32 years and I totally understand this now. I would not have understood it 10 years ago.

After 53 years, you don’t have enough spare energy to kill him.

Somehow, I get the feeling this one will not make it into the list of “500 all-time great romantic quotes”, Aunty.

Or, sometimes a particularly annoying Total Stranger.
