Marcus Island a several acres large island in the Pacific used to have a population of 38 people: 28 Coast Guard personnel who maintained the LORAN station and 10 Japanese oceanographers and meteorologists.

There were two time zones on the island as tiny as it is. The Americans kept local time, the Japanese kept Japan Standard Time. The two times are separated by 2 hours. It did not matter where you were on the island, the time zone depended on who you asked for the time.
