Jimmy Hoffa is part of a bridge abutment outside of St. Louis, MO. I was told that back in the days when I worked on a unionized loading dock in Elizabeth, NJ. Is it true?….Could be. I certainly don’t know, but my guess is as good as anybody’s.
“It’s an odd thing, but anyone who disappears is said to be seen in San Francisco.” (Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray.)
On my mom’s side I have a great-great-great-[great-…] uncle who lit out to California for the Gold Rush and was never heard from again. That’s probably who Oscar was referring to.
There are many cases. For Canada, it’s the disappearance of Ambrose Small. In most cases, there is at least a whiff of scandal that the misper likely wanted to escape..

If it weren’t for the occasional mention in the comics, I suspect almost nobody would remember Judge Crater.

They’re pretty sure they’ve found Amelia Earhart.
