Coming Soon 👀 At the beginning of April, you’ll be

I always look forward to 12/21 b/c the days start getting longer. I’m working on a parody of “It’s the most wonderful day of the year” with “It’s the shortest day of the year. Though winter’s settling in and the snow birds are a-leavin’”… It’s a work in progress.
The lake in front of my house is partially frozen over. There is a good covering of snow on the ground, and I’m not likely to see the lawn again until April. It’s 19 degrees (F) and more snow and sleet is forecast for today. The roads are a mess covered with salt and gravel. Has Winter arrived here in The Saint John Valley in northernmost Maine? Damn straight!
I actually just learned yesterday that there are astronomical seasons and meteorological seasons. Meteorlogical winter is Dec 1 to Feb 28 (or 29 in a leap year), spring is March 1 to May 31, etc.
Samhain (November 1) is the beginning of winter – Yule ~21st is Midwinter Day. That’s my calendar and I’m sticking to it. (logic: the shortest day of the year (light-wise) should be the Middle of Winter, not the start)

Funny how this strip is called “The Barn,” yet these poor guys are never seen in one. Perhaps a name change is in order.

Baby, it’s cold out there! I agree with Rory…doesn’t matter the date, it matters how much snow is on the ground. Now THATS WINTER!
