In states, like NY, where there are bottle deposits, you can opt to donate your five cents to charity. I just leave my bottles for the guy in the neighborhood who collects them on trash day. A worthy cause.
In Denmark — the cartoonists’ home — all machines that take returnable bottles and cans and give you money (actually a receipt that can be cashed or used for payment), have two buttons: one to get the receipt and another to donate the amount to charity. (I’m not sure if it specifies which charity/charities.)
I think the same is true of various other European countries, though the details — including the amount of deposit on various containers — are one thing which is notuniform among the different countries of the European Union.
In Ontario when you bring your empties back to the Beer Store (beer or wine or liquor), you get the deposit cash back, or you can tell the cashier to donate that money to charity.

Missing, a thin yellow slice – Because you really need the few cents of refund to help with actual groceries.
