I kind of like the idea of selecting candidates the way we select jurors. Any registered voter may have their number come up. Of course, they have to agree, and after that, they go through a constitutional test to make sure they understand it. I suppose if the office requires specific knowledge (like Comptroller or DA), there were have to be a vetting process to make sure they understood the content matter — but otherwise, just pick folks by lot. Can’t do much worse than what we’ve done in the recent past.
