I’m guessing that you can’t just show up at a “soup kitchen” (not sure that they’re called that anymore) and then expect to start serving. In fact, that’s probably the easiest job that they have. Try loading and unloading boxes of food, or cleaning up. You know, something that they actually need done.
While in the Navy and stationed in Philadelphia for our ship’s overhaul, the priest at my sons high school ran a soup kitchen and was always looking for volunteers – I put the word out on the ship that help was needed, the Commanding Officer heard about it and offered to sponsor a crew to help – we provided a bus for transportation from the ship to the soup kitchen – we asked for volunteers and ran it daily – never short of volunteers and they worked hard every day – the soup kitchen was always spotless when the day was done – the church was happy and the volunteers were happy to get off the ship for a day or two. The program was adopted by other ships for various charity needs in the city and was going strong when I transferred out.
I volunteer with a group of friends at several different places including our food bank. We have kids as young as 5 that help out. You do have to sign up on-line and tell them elementary kids are coming. Then those kids + parents are assigned rooms that are safe for kids. They work their butts off. Often it is senior boxes or hygiene kits that we are putting together. We do it once a quarter – not just Thanksgiving and Christmas.
As the coordinator for our local food bank this strip gets a giant thumbs up from me.I love having parents bring their kids in to help! It’s the high lite of our day when a dad or mom brings in their little ones and asks if they can join. My best adult helpers all tell me they started out exactly the same way.

We always hope and pray that it is our good example which we’ve set for our children that will be passed on to future generations. Excellent strip!

The hardest part is finding volunteers to clean up afterward.

The sad thing is that a generation later the problem still exists.
