I’ll go out on a limb and say they’re smarter than, say, 75% of the population. They’re certainly smarter than anyone would would read that study.
I know many PhDs and they all very good at what they do, however outside of their area of research, they all have their share of “ hold my beer” moments.

Many studies come from gov’t grants. There are smart people that figure out what the gov’t will pay for…

Ben Carson was a trailblazer. He broke widely believed stereotypes. The biggest one was that you had to be really smart to be a brain surgeon.
