In my house, the dog eating homework was a very real danger — he loved to get his jaws on anything paper. (One time he chewed up a dollar bill, and we were all glad it wasn’t a larger denomination!) So it was a good idea for my brother and me to keep our homework in folders.

From personal experience, the cats have caused more trouble with computers and deleting or changing things. Random keys can cause all kinds of issues.

I think it was suggested in “Doggie Doings Diary” in the early ’90s. Then educators learned to require it uploaded to the school cloud.
