I remember when Porsche put crank windows on a performance 911 to save weight on the mechanism. That said, I’ve never had an electric window fail on me.
My driver’s side (of course) window recently failed. It cost OVER $800 to fix it! Apparently, at least for my car, there is no after market version available and the dealer part was OVER $600. Add in labor, VOILA. YIKES! If it hadn’t been the driver’s side window I would not have bothered to get it fixed for that price.
Had a 1978 VW Rabbit where the window crank broke – as in broke completely off. Luckily I could just go to the junkyard and pull a handle from a wrecked Rabbit for $10 to replace it. That’s a lot harder with an electric window mechanism!
All of this is making me feel I was not crazy for my initial reaction when they came out, and immediately wondering what happens when they break? Having worked on my beloved Dodge Darts, that’s how I think -yeah, nice feature, but what about when you get to a couple hundred thousand miles? Tho to be fair our current two cars are each approaching or exceeding 300K miles and no problem with the windows, so far…

Keep the electric windows but bring back the triangular vent windows. Yes, I’m vintage.

$700 for a Buick window motor in 2004. …And $700 plus for a door lock electrical problem on a Grand Marquis a few years later.
