Friday’s move by the Republican National Committee was to censure Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for “persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse.”

The January 6 rioters and insurrectionists were not engaged in “legitimate political discourse”. Any suggestion that there was a legitimate political question whether to overturn the 2020 election, and that that’s what the insurrectionists were doing, is (as even Mike Pence says) un-American. And by doing Trump’s bidding and by propagating Trump’s big lie about the election, is the RNC is participating in un-American activities.

This is obvious to anybody who’s not in thrall to Trump. And the dwindling band of sane Republicans know this.

Roughly 150 police officers were injured on that day. Countless are still dealing with the trauma. More than 750 of the rioters have been charged with crimes.

All of that violence and destruction to try to upend a democratic election and the peaceful transfer of power this nation has prided itself upon since its creation.

This, according to the Republican Party — not the fringes, the recognized leadership of the party — is now “legitimate political discourse.”

Calling the censure resolution “a marvel of alternate-reality thinking of the kind that former President Donald Trump is so good at,” the editors continued, “The RNC’s unprecedented sanction against both of them for that action confirms that the GOP no longer stands for anything beyond blind allegiance to the former president who fomented the violence.”

“The leaders of the Republican Party have made themselves willing hostages to a man who admits he tried to overturn a presidential election and suggests he would pardon Jan. 6 defendants, some of whom have been charged with seditious conspiracy. I’m a constitutional conservative and I do not recognize those in my party who have abandoned the Constitution to embrace Donald Trump. History will be their judge," she stated.

The editors tersely added, “Those words should be engraved in stone and stand as a memorial to a once-great political party that no longer exists in any recognizable form.”

Voilà! There it was right in front of them! It was those damn voting machines! All they had to do was get their hands on those voting machines in three “key states” and … well … what was the plan, exactly?

So there’s at least a scrap of a plan. The Powell-Flynn-Byrne team thought that it would take only seven days to get a recount done in six large counties of multiple states Trump had lost.

The RNC has arguably engaged in fraud by labeling a violent insurrection as “legitimate political discourse.” In so doing it appears to be making a blatant attempt to cover-up—aid and abet after the fact—the January 6 sedition and insurrection. Further, the RNC can be seen as encouraging future sedition and insurrection by labeling such as “legitimate discourse.” Would this be sufficient grounds for filing an action in whatever jurisdiction where the RNC is registered or chartered—the District of Columbia? elsewhere?—seeking to have the organization dissolved for being an entity that engages in fraud and encourages sedition and insurrection against the government of the United States of America? Indeed, how can we allow such an organization that attacks our democracy to continue to operate?

If there is a pathway for seeking the RNC’s dissolution, might it be faster and easier to seek this administrative action than to secure a criminal conviction of the principals involved in the January 6 insurrection and associated plans to overturn the election?
