I at times feel the same way when my wifi goes out and I’m unable to comment on GoComics, watch YouTubes, listen to YouTube music. As for when the electricity goes in the evening before sundown (like it did months ago one Sunday), I would call my folks (whose electricity wasn’t affected) and see if I could hang out at their place until I was bored and/or my electricity came back (which it did later that day after calling the grocery store to confirm).

Peter keeps saying “AAAA!” Does that mean two double-A batteries?

Every TV I’ve ever owned had buttons on the set itself you could use.

He’ll get his 10 000 daily steps from from walking back and forth between the TV and the sofa.

Good thing Peter didn’t live in the dark days before cable TV and remote controls. I don’t think he’d survive only having 5 channels and having to get up every time you wanted to change the channel.

Pull the batteries out of the remote and put them in a warm place (I prefer a pocket without keys or change). After a couple of minutes, put them back in the remote. You’ll get a couple more button presses out of them.

While you’re waiting for your dead batteries to warm is an ideal time to add “Batteries” to your shopping list.

Lithium batteries last much longer and will not leak and make a corroded mess in a device if you forget about them. They’re perfect in low-current things like this. More expensive, but they’re worth it.

I get a message on my TV that the remote batteries need replacing.

This strip was originally published in 2001. I bought a new TV in 2008 – seven years after this strip first ran – and it had buttons on it, so if the remote didn’t work, you could still use the TV. Then I bought another new TV a couple of years ago. It doesn’t have a single button on it. If the batteries in the remote are dead, the TV is useless. Why do they make TVs like that?

I just rewatched the Dr Who short" Night of the Doctor" last night. “Four minutes? But that’s ages! What if I get bored? I need a television, a couple of books. Anyone for chess? Bring me knitting.”

Well, he could always watch a videotape or play Nintendo. Wait, no he can’t! Without the remote, he can’t change the TV to channel 3!

A high schooler with a bedtime?

In my day … we had CBC, CTV, TV Guide, TVO, CityTV, and Global TV, and we were damned happy to have them… also, we had to get up, walk to the TV and twist a knob.

TV’s still have buttons you can press to change the channel
