Well, as long as you don’t throw the photos away after you scan them, you’ll still have them.
Just don’t rely solely on digital to preserve your photos. Digital files will eventually become corrupted and you won’t have any way to open them. Plus future generations won’t have access to them. Print out anything you want your grandkids to see.
I have a collection of photos and photo albums from my family that date back to the late 1800s and through the early to mid-1900s. Some were in fairly fragile condition. I have scanned, digitally enhanced, and preserved them in digital files but backed the files up by downloading them on a dongle and on top-quality CD, so they can be copied and downloaded by future generations.
I did copy several on photo paper, matted and framed them, and have them hanging in my home.
I have pictures that were taken over 100 years ago… if they were digitalized, maybe the way of looking at them will be long gone 100 years from now, or the machines necessary will be outdated, with new technology taking their place!

Scanning them in means you can back them up, post them, fix them, share them, and much more.

Same goes for books vs kindles.

It’s been a while since I’ve had a whiff of Chanel No.5. Brings back memories…

I can photograph my photos if I want to share them. Looking at digital vs photos isn’t comparable.
