It’s all a matter of perspective. What may start out as a ‘teaching’ lesson, can quickly turn into a ‘learning’ moment, when the shoe is on the other foot!
Dogs can learn right from wrong as defined by training, and they can feel guilt when their impulses violate the rules. See how they behave when they’re caught, avoiding eye contact, tucking tail, slack ears. I think it was Dick van Dyke who told the story of his Great Dane stealing the Thanksgiving turkey off the table and how the dog himself was mortified and it changed his whole demeanor after that (not for the good, sadly). Anyway, not a moral code but dogs know when they break training. Not like our cats, who scoff at the very idea of right and wrong. “It is to laugh!”

I find this cartoon to be morally ambiguous.

I wonder if Nelson actually saw Roscoe eat the cake. It could have been Muffin. Or Earl.

Dogs only live for the moment Opal, Roscoe has no idea why you are chastising him! The cookie is lost anyway!

Then why is it if I walk into the kitchen and my dog walks out head down slinking out, an obvious doggy body language he has been counter surfing.

Last panel, Roscoe is thinking “Whatever “.

If Muffin did that, she would say it was OK.

I maintain my position that Roscoe is far and away the most lovable and enjoyable character in this strip. His expressions are priceless!

It’s people getting what they deserve when it happens to them, but a crime when it happens to you.
