    That’s why in our marriage rite, it’s very specific: “If any of you can show just cause why they may not lawfully be married, speak now….” Back in the day it was supposed to prevent anyone who was already married, underage, being forced into it, or mentally incompetent from getting married. Now a marriage license pretty much takes care of that.
