Now I know why there was zero mention of the 4th of July in this comic strip this year. I read this strip for a young boy and his dog and nothing else!
When I was just a kid, I saw a “Mark Trail” strip (back when that strip was good) with an illustration of NYC halfway under water, with the sun blazing above.
It upset me then (during the early ’60’s), but today, that’s a real possibility!!
I remember a time about two years ago when Red was making remarks about the heat and someone commented, “I know a girl you might like, Red. She’s Swedish.”
Greta Thunberg would certainly agree that Red has gone from being funny and started being alarming.
Red is part of a generation that will start to think seriously about the environment. That’s a good, positive thing! Love my little ones and stay cool!
Okay, let’s analyze today’s strip. It is hot, they have been talking, even joking previously, about the heat, always responding to “How hot is it?” For Red to say it is so hot ice caps are melting and seas rising falls in line as examples of how hot it is. Super hot. When Rover says that isn’t funny, he is merely correct. That we are discussing global warming is our contemporary view. Moving on.
This is still the same wonderful strip we all know and love. The fact that it references a scientific fact (which is pointedly ×not× a political view…ice caps ×are× melting and seas ×are× rising) should not be alarming. And those responding negatively to such a fact should analyze their own reaction and why they feel the need to do so. In fact, it’s probably likely that a boy like Red would make such a statement – he is, after all, the son of a scientist! It may not have been a super common topic in that era, but I find that beside the point.
Wow! Just like the exact same thing happened 328 years ago all over the entire world. I wonder what great industrial revolution was happening then. I bet the cars did it……MAYBE IT WAS JUST NATURE DOING IT’S THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But but but Obama said the seas stopped rising the day he was inaugurated!

If it’s really so hot, why is he sitting there with his bare feet setting on the street? (Especially if that is blacktop.)

Hmmm….this strip takes place (I think) in the ’60s. It was probably funny THEN. Not sure climate change was on our collective radar back then.

Objection, your honor. In Red’s day, science was concerned about global cooling.

It may be true, but I don’t see any coastal property owners selling their beachfronts for a home in the mountains…they must not be that worried.

Red needs a homemade popsicle from Mom’s freeze and to share with Rover.

Indeed it’s not, so why make it your “punchline”?
